How to Measure Your Pool Correctly

Accurate pool dimensions are the single most important input for any pool volume calculation.

Inside Wall to Wall

Measure the water-holding distance between interior walls, not the outer shell or marketing label.

Water Depth, Not Wall Height

Use actual water depth from the surface to the floor — not the total wall height above ground.

Diameter Through Center

For round and oval pools, stretch the tape across the widest point through the exact center of the basin.

Re-Measure for Features

Every pool volume calculation starts with physical measurements, and the accuracy of those dimensions directly controls the accuracy of the result. Measure the actual water-holding interior of your pool — the distance between the inside walls where water sits — rather than the outside dimensions of the pool shell, the coping, or any size printed in a product brochure. Manufacturer nominal dimensions may describe the frame or shell rather than the actual filled water dimensions, so measure the interior water dimensions when possible.

Always record water depth, not total wall height. In above-ground pools the wall extends above the waterline, and in kiddie pools even a few inches of difference changes the result noticeably. For round pools, pull the tape across the full diameter through the center; for oval pools, measure both the long and short diameters at the widest points.

Use feet or metres consistently, and avoid mixing. If you measured in inches, convert inches to decimal feet before entry. For pools that slope from a shallow end to a deep end, a simple average-depth method can be used when the slope is reasonably uniform: add the shallow-end depth to the deep-end depth and divide by two. This gives a single depth value you can plug into any rectangular, round, or L-shaped pool calculator.

A constant-depth pool — a flat-bottom basin where the water is the same depth everywhere — is the most straightforward case. The average depth equals the actual depth, and the geometric formula gives a direct geometric estimate of the modeled water volume. Sloped floors introduce an approximation because the real bottom may curve, step, or transition in a non-linear way that a straight line average cannot fully capture.

Pools with a hopper bottom, safety ledge, or multi-level floor make the single average-depth shortcut less reliable. In those designs, breaking the pool into two or more rectangular or round sections — each with its own measured depth — and adding the volumes together produces a closer estimate.
